German Engineering Websites: English or German?

German and English engineering specifications displayed beside industrial machinery

Should a German engineering website use English or German? Use the language the target buyer uses to discover, qualify and discuss the service. Only publish a language version the company can maintain accurately.

For many industrial firms the answer is both, but not as identical machine-translated copies of every page.

When is German essential?

German is important when local operations, procurement, technical users or candidates search and work primarily in German. It is especially valuable for high-intent service, location, careers, contact and support pages.

English may be suitable for international group content, export buyers or specialist technical communities. Map the decision journey before choosing the site structure.

Prioritise pages by user task

Rank pages into four groups:

  1. qualification pages such as capability and sector;
  2. conversion pages such as contact and RFQ;
  3. operational pages such as support and documentation; and
  4. editorial pages such as insights.

Translate the highest-value tasks first. A complete German navigation leading to untranslated technical pages creates a broken journey.

Localise technical terminology

Build an approved glossary covering services, components, standards, job titles and calls to action. Use a technical reviewer, not only a language reviewer. Keep units, decimal conventions and document references consistent.

Germany's Industrie 4.0 platform maintains German and English communication, but a supplier should use the terms its own customers use rather than copying policy vocabulary.

Set ownership before launch

Assign an owner for each language, define the source version and establish what happens when a product, certificate or contact changes. Show review dates on high-risk technical or regulatory content.

If a page cannot be maintained, publish a useful summary and link to the authoritative source instead of leaving stale translated claims online.

Avoid duplicate, disconnected sites

Use consistent URLs, language signals, navigation and entity information. Connect equivalent pages and preserve meaningful internal links in both languages. Translate metadata and image alt text as part of the page, not as an afterthought.

Questions that determine the right language model

Where does the buyer first discover the firm? Search terms, distributor referrals and procurement platforms may point to different entry languages.

Which documents affect the decision? Include datasheets, certificates, manuals and RFQ communication in the localisation plan.

Who can approve updates? A bilingual technical-commercial owner should resolve terminology and priority. If nobody owns the German version, reduce scope before quality declines.

Creatif Work builds engineering websites with localisation as an operating system. Our website service helps international firms choose which German buyer journeys deserve full localisation and gives internal teams a manageable review process.
