Malaysia Shipyard Capability Statement: What to Include

A Malaysia shipyard capability statement should let an owner, superintendent or ship manager decide whether the yard can take the vessel before they start an email exchange. It needs physical limits, repair scope, technical resources, certifications, response contacts and comparable work, not a company history with a list of services attached.
Malaysia's shipbuilding and ship repair sector serves offshore, oil and gas, logistics and regional vessel markets. MIDA's shipbuilding and ship repair overview records 99 registered yards and national capability to build vessels up to 30,000 DWT. A buyer does not need every yard to do everything. They need to identify the yard that fits this job.
What belongs in a shipyard capability statement?
Include the vessel envelope, facilities, trade coverage, certifications, recent comparable projects and one accountable contact. Put the decision facts on the first two pages. Supporting certificates and equipment schedules can follow.
Yard and vessel limits
State the facts that determine physical fit:
- berth, slipway, dock or synchrolift dimensions;
- maximum vessel length, beam, draught, displacement or DWT;
- crane capacities and lifting constraints;
- workshop area and covered fabrication space;
- shore power, fresh water and waste-handling provision;
- access restrictions and operating hours; and
- locations, including which services are available at each.
Use the parameter that is genuinely relevant. A generic “large yard with modern facilities” cannot be compared with the vessel particulars on a superintendent's screen.
Repair and engineering scope
Separate in-house work from partner-managed work. Hull steel, piping, mechanical overhaul, electrical work, blasting, coating, tank cleaning, class surveys and riding squads involve different people, facilities and approvals.
For each core service, show material range, procedure or standard, equipment, typical project size and whether the work is available afloat, alongside or in dock. If a subcontractor performs a specialist process, explain how that supplier is controlled rather than presenting the capability as entirely internal.
Our article on the spec sheet as a web page explains why searchable parameters should appear online as well as in a PDF. The capability statement is what a buyer forwards; the web page is what they find and verify.
Class, quality and safety evidence
Publish certificates with scope, issuer and expiry. A row of class society and ISO logos is not enough. The buyer needs to know whether approval covers the process, facility and period relevant to the job.
Where permitted, include welding procedure qualifications, welder qualifications, non-destructive testing resources, quality plans, safety management arrangements and environmental controls. Link a public certificate register or verification route when one exists.
Comparable work
Choose projects by similarity, not prestige. One repair record should state:
- vessel type and useful particulars;
- work scope and major quantities;
- the yard's role;
- duration and schedule constraint;
- class or inspection involvement; and
- outcome, including safe and on-time redelivery where supportable.
If the owner cannot be named, anonymise the identity but keep the technical shape. “Regional offshore support vessel, 72 metres, steel renewal and propulsion overhaul during a 16-day docking” carries more value than a photograph captioned “successful project”.
Response and commercial route
Marine work is time-sensitive. Name the person or duty role handling enquiries, state working hours and time zone, and publish what information a useful request should contain: vessel particulars, location, desired window, scope, drawings and class requirements.
Do not publish eleven phone numbers and ask the buyer to understand the organisation. One clear route with a defined response expectation is stronger.
PDF and website: use both
The capability statement should be downloadable, versioned and dated. The website should carry the same facts as structured pages that can be searched, translated and linked directly.
Treat one source record as authoritative. When a crane is replaced, a certificate renews or a berth limit changes, update the record and regenerate the public surfaces. Three conflicting versions are worse than one plain document.
A practical contents order
- Yard summary and immediate contact.
- Vessel envelope and facility limits.
- Core repair and engineering services.
- Quality, safety and class evidence.
- Three comparable projects.
- Equipment and specialist resources.
- Locations and logistics.
- Certificate appendix.
This is the order a buyer uses, not the order the company developed historically.
Creatif Work builds marine websites around that same decision path: fleet or yard limits first, evidence beside capability, and a direct operational contact. See our marine industry approach and the guide to selling from Singapore to overseas buyers. If your current statement is a company profile rather than a working qualification document, send it to us and we will show you what the buyer still cannot verify.
