Why engineering firms should stop explaining what they do

A project engineer at a main contractor has a package to place and four firms to check before Friday. She has specified more chilled water systems than the person who wrote your website has read about.
She opens your homepage. The first thing it tells her is that mechanical and electrical engineering covers the services that make a building habitable and safe.
That is the moment she leaves, and you never find out that she was there.
The instinct behind that opening paragraph is generous. Someone imagined a visitor who does not know the field and decided to help them. The problem is that this visitor almost never arrives, and the one who does arrive reads the explanation as a signal about you.
Who is actually reading an engineering firm website?
The traffic that matters to an engineering firm website is a short and specific list.
A project engineer or QS assembling a tender list. A consultant or specifier checking whether one firm can carry a whole package or whether half of it will be sublet to someone nobody has vetted. A procurement officer verifying that you exist, that your certifications are current and that you are still trading. An asset owner or plant manager with a failure and a shutdown window. Occasionally, a client’s client running due diligence down the chain.
Every one of them knows the discipline. Several of them know their corner of it better than you do. None of them opened the site to find out what ACMV stands for.
The money behind that traffic is not small. BCA reported preliminary construction demand of S$50.5 billion for 2025 and projects a similar level for 2026, with packages for Changi T5, the MBS expansion and two rail line extensions still to be awarded. Precision and process work runs on the same logic in a different pipeline. In both cases the work is placed off shortlists, and shortlists are assembled by people doing exactly what that project engineer is doing on a Thursday afternoon.
What explaining actually costs you
Three things, and none of them are cosmetic.
It costs credibility. Explaining a discipline to a specialist reads one of two ways: either you have assumed they are a novice, or you are not confident enough in the specifics to lead with them. In technical fields, over-explanation is a competence signal pointing the wrong way. The firms that read as most capable are the ones that assume the reader is capable too.
It costs space. Every paragraph of general explanation is a paragraph not spent on scope, capacity or evidence. This is why the specifics end up three levels deep. Nothing was deleted to make room for the explanation, so the useful material got pushed down the page and off the homepage entirely.
It costs search. Generic descriptions of a discipline compete against every other generic description of that discipline, including the ones on Wikipedia and on the sites of firms twenty times your size. Specifics do not have that problem. Nobody else is publishing your machine list.
There is also a quieter cost. Writing for a hypothetical beginner is comfortable, because it does not require anyone in the business to commit to a number. Publishing your actual capacity does.
Replace explanation with specification
Specification is not the same as more detail. It is a different category of content, and it falls into four groups.
Capability, as scope rather than adjectives. Which disciplines you carry, which systems, which standards you work to, and where the boundary sits between what you self-perform and what you sublet. That boundary is the single most useful thing an M&E firm can publish, because it is the question the main contractor is actually asking.
Capacity, in numbers. Workshop and yard area. Machine list with working envelopes and achievable tolerances. Lifting and handling capacity. Panel build throughput. Licensed and certified personnel by discipline. Coverage hours and whether they are genuine. “We have the capability” is not a statement of capacity, and everyone in this audience knows the difference.
Accreditation, with scope and dates attached. Certificate name, issuing body, what the certificate actually covers, and when it expires.
Evidence of the exact job. Asset type, scope, constraint, outcome. Not a client logo wall.
Nielsen Norman Group has been making a version of this argument from usability testing for a decade: incomplete or vague specification content forces users to call for answers or leave the site entirely, and complete specifications serve both the late-stage decision maker and the early-stage researcher at once. Their test subjects were buying products. Yours are buying a package worth considerably more, with more downside if the choice is wrong.
Accreditation is not decoration, and it is not a footer logo
This is where the pattern gets specific, and where our own field data is bluntly useful.
Across 54 Singapore B2B sites we reviewed in August 2026, the engineering, M&E and precision group had one dominant technical failure: unpatched software. Six of the twelve firms in that group were running an outdated or end-of-life CMS or plugin. Engineering was the sector most likely to run WordPress and the least likely to patch it.
The more expensive pattern sat on top of that one. Hard-won accreditation, sitting on a neglected site.
One firm holds API Q1, the quality standard for organisations manufacturing to the oil and gas sector. Its website runs a plugin last updated in 2019 and carries a footer copyright seven years out of date, with the final word of “All rights reserved” missing a letter. Another holds AS9100D, the aerospace quality standard, on a site whose News link returns a server error and whose most recent downloadable document is a brochure from 2018. A third employs ASNT Level III inspectors, a qualification that takes years to obtain and directly determines what inspection work the firm can sign off, documented nowhere on the site. The only way to reach them is an ISP webmail address.
None of those firms are unserious. Every one of them earned an accreditation that costs real money and real audit time to hold. Every one of them then filed it on a website that quietly contradicts it.
Consider what the procurement officer does with that. She is not thinking “these people are busy”. She is looking at a certificate with no visible date on a site whose newest dated item is from 2019, and she is wondering whether the certificate is current, because she has no way to tell from here and she has three other firms to check. Verifying it takes an email and two days. Dropping you takes no time at all.
The fix is not a redesign. Publish each certificate with the issuing body, the scope it covers, and the expiry date. Update the date in the week it is renewed. If your ISO 9001 covers fabrication but not site installation, say so, because a specifier reads the scope statement and not the badge. If you hold personnel qualifications rather than company certifications, publish the qualifications and the number of people holding them by discipline. That is a stronger claim than a logo, and it is one your competitors are not making.
The project record that nineteen firms did not publish
Of the same 54 sites, 19 published no project record, portfolio or case studies at all. Not a thin one. None.
For engineering firms this is the most expensive omission available, because the buyer’s question is never “can you do this in principle”. It is “have you done this, at this scale, on this kind of asset, recently, and did it go well”. A capability list answers the first question. Only a project record answers the second.
Confidentiality is the usual reason given, and it is a real constraint rather than an excuse. It is also not a dead end, because the client’s name is rarely the useful part. Anonymise the client, not the work. A project entry earns its place if it states the asset or facility type, the scope you self-performed, the systems and standards involved, the constraint you worked under, the duration, and how it ended.
“A live pharmaceutical facility, ACMV upgrade across three weekend shutdowns, no interruption to production” names nobody and tells a specifier everything. Anonymous specificity beats named vagueness every time.
The same logic applies to prequalification content in adjacent sectors. When we rebuilt Hong Hock Global, a water infrastructure contractor whose work is awarded almost entirely on prequalification, the BizSafe Star status and BCA-certified personnel moved out of a footer strip and into an early, specific, stated claim, because that is the order the buyer reads in.
What this looks like when it is done properly
Two of our own projects show the shape of it.
THK Engineering works across electrical, ACMV, fire protection, plumbing and sanitary, and ELV systems, running the full lifecycle from consultation and design through installation, testing, commissioning and maintenance. M&E packages are won on shortlists drawn up by main contractors and consultants, and the narrow question being asked is whether the firm can carry the whole package. So the site presents the five disciplines as one continuous capability rather than a menu of separate services, and shows the lifecycle end to end. A contractor assessing THK for a fit-out or an addition and alteration package can confirm scope in a single pass. Marketing language was removed entirely, because this audience reads faster without it.
Towa Marine, who repair and install marine air-conditioning, ventilation, refrigeration and cold room systems out of Singapore and into the yards at Port Klang and Tanjong Uncang, made the same trade in a different sector. The site opens on availability and reach rather than company history. The 24-hour response commitment and the three-yard footprint sit at the top, with the system-by-system capability list and a direct line immediately beneath. Three decades of experience and the BizSafe certification still appear, but they support the decision rather than delay it.
Neither site explains its discipline. Both specify it.
Where to start
Not with a redesign. With an inventory, which takes an afternoon and can be done on paper.
List every accreditation you hold, with its scope and expiry date. List your plant and equipment with capacities and tolerances. List certified and licensed personnel by discipline and count them. List the last twelve projects with asset type, scope self-performed, and the constraint that made each one difficult. Write down your genuine response commitment and who answers it.
Then open your website and count how many of those facts appear on it, and how many clicks it takes to reach each one.
Most engineering firms find that the majority is either missing or buried, while the homepage spends its first two screens explaining the discipline to nobody. That gap is the brief. It is a content problem before it is a design problem, and it is the reason a rebuild is worth doing at all.
